Featured Icons: Charlie’s Angels – Pioneering Television Show, The Original “Girls Who Kick Ass!”

http://www.hollywoodyesterday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/charlies-angels-farah-kate-jaclyn.jpg

Charlie's Angels was a television series about three women who work for a private investigation agency, and is one of the first shows to showcase women in roles traditionally reserved for men. The series was broadcast in the USA on the ABC Television Network from 1976 to 1981 and was one of the most successful series of the 1970s. Charlie's Angels was created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts and produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. In pre-production, the original proposed title was The Alley Cats with the idea being that the show would be a vehicle for upcoming actress Kate Jackson who had proved very popular with viewers in another police drama, "The Rookies". Another title considered was Harry's Angels, but was changed to "Charlie's Angels" as not to conflict with another television series Harry O.

The Premise:

Three women, the Angels (originally Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett-Majors, and Jaclyn Smith), graduated from the Los Angeles police academy only to be assigned such duties as handling switchboards and directing traffic. They quit and were hired to work for the Charles Townsend Agency as private investigators. Their boss, Charlie (voiced by John Forsythe), is never seen full face — in some episodes the viewer gets to see the back of his head and his arms, talking through a phone while surrounded by beautiful women — assigning cases to the Angels and his liaison, Bosley (played by David Doyle), via a speaker phone. As the show progressed, Fawcett-Majors and Jackson both eventually left the show for other projects. Fawcett was replaced by Cheryl Ladd as Kris Munroe, Jill's sister and a former police officer from San Francisco. Jackson was replaced by Shelley Hack as Tiffany Welles, a former police officer from Boston. In the final season Tanya Roberts replaced Hack as Julie Rogers, a former model turned detective.

Like other American TV crime shows of the 1970s, Charlie's Angels was generally formatted in the way of a procedural drama.

Classic Character Profile: Firehair

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ed/Firehair_Origin.jpg/220px-Firehair_Origin.jpg

Perhaps the first significant comic book character from Fiction House Magazines was Sheena, Queen of the Jungle (depending on how one defines "significant character") who pioneered a whole genre of female versions of Tarzan. Fiction House also has a credible claim of having published the first female superhero (depending on how one defines "superhero"), Fantomah. In fact, over the years, Fiction House was an industry leader in the female aspects of heroism — not because of any precocious 1940s devotion to the cause of feminism, but simply to attract more of the adolescent male readers who made up such a large portion of their customer base. Firehair, a woman who adopted the culture of the Dakota Indians, was their most popular western hero.

At first, "Firehair" was the only real name the character had. She was introduced in Fiction House's Rangers Comics #21 (February, 1945), where she replaced Commando Ranger, a hero of the war that was just then winding down. There, she was depicted as the daughter of a wealthy Boston businessman traveling through the town of Plainsville (Texas?) under the assumed name "J.B. Smith". He addressed the woman later known as "Firehair" only by the pet name "Princess" (no relation). Readers never found out why he was trying to build a new life in a new land. Later in that issue, he was killed by criminals posing as Indians, who left the daughter for dead. But she was alive, tho she'd lost all memory. She was found and nursed back to health by Little Ax, son of Tehama, the local chief.

Over the next couple of issues, she adjusted to her new life, learning the skills she needed to be a productive — in fact, exemplary part of the tribe, outdoing many male members who had been there since birth. In the second story, she acquired her horse, Devil-Eye. In #24 (August, 1945) she recovered her memory — her name was Lynn Cabot, a fact that was mentioned now and then in the series. She traveled to Boston to claim her inheritance, but returned to the tribe and her heroic career as soon as the errand was accomplished.

Classic Character Profile: SKY GIRL

Sky Girl has her priorities straight. Artist: Matt Baker.

Aviation adventure was a popular genre in American fiction during the second quarter of the 20th century, starting in 1927, when Charles Lindbergh made his famous flight. In newspaper comics, representatives included Tailspin Tommy, Barney Baxter and Scorchy Smith. In comic books, they included Hop Harrigan, Wing Turner and the entire population of Air Fighters Comics (Airboy, Bald Eagle etc.).

Very few of them were women. There were Flyin' Jenny in newspapers and The Black Angel in comic books, but that was about it — at least until the 1944 debut of Sky Girl from Fiction House Magazines (Tiger Girl, Firehair), a comics industry leader in the feminine aspects of heroism — not because they were particularly enlightened, but so they could show a lot of their protagonists' skin.

Sky Girl started in Jumbo Comics #68 (October, 1944), where Sheena, Queen of the Jungle was the cover feature. The series she replaced was The Creep with Inspector Dayton, detective stories that weren't intended to be taken entirely seriously. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Featured Icon: Anna Nicole Smith - Playmate, Model and Sex Symbol

Vickie Lynn Marshall (November 28, 1967 – February 8, 2007), better known under the stage name of Anna Nicole Smith, was an American model, sex symbol, actress and television personality. She first gained popularity in Playboy, becoming the 1993 Playmate of the Year. She modeled for clothing companies, including Guess jeans and Lane Bryant. She also starred in her own reality TV show, The Anna Nicole Show.

Born and raised in Texas, Smith dropped out of high school and was married at the age of 17. Her highly publicized second marriage to oil business executive and business tycoon J. Howard Marshall, 63 years her senior, resulted in speculation that she married the octogenarian for his money, which she denied. Following his death, she began a lengthy legal battle over a share of his estate; her case, Marshall v. Marshall, reached the U.S. Supreme Court on a question of federal jurisdiction.

She died at age 39, apparently as a result of an overdose of prescription drugs. In the months before her death, she was the focus of renewed press coverage surrounding the death of her son, Daniel Smith, and the paternity and custody battle over her daughter Dannielynn.
